Ngā Pou Tohutohu | Auckland South Drug Treatment Programme
Auckland South Drug Treatment Programme is a collaboration between Odyssey and Serco in Auckland South Corrections Facility. It is a 6- to-12-month alcohol and other drug programme grounded in a new model of care developed by Pam Armstrong (Ngāti Wai, Ngāti Whātua, Ngāpuhi) called Ngā Pou Tohutohu, which is an advanced bicultural approach to delivering treatment. The Ngā Pou Tohutohu model focusses on oranga – people’s wellbeing - within the context of substance use. Odyssey run a Therapeutic Community within a 60 bed unit.

“I came into this DTP thinking I knew a lot about the effects my drug habit had on me. DTP taught me to strategise and plan for the future and to live by being honest. I’m more knowledgeable today because of Odyssey.”
Aphi, 34
-
The DTP is eligible to males, 18 years and over, who are currently serving a prison sentence and would benefit from alcohol and drug treatment.
-
Referrals to our Drug Treatment Programmes are managed through the Department of Corrections and Serco. Potential participants are referred by their Corrections case managers.
-
The modified TC approach in the Drug Treatment Programme offers a group-based approach to rehabilitation, where peers support and influence each other to develop pro-social behaviour and to work collectively towards recovery.
All participants in the DTP receive extensive individual and group interventions, as well as education and structured activities each day, and work closely with their allocated Odyssey staff member.

“The DTP has been a really positive experience for me, giving me a place to reflect, a community that reinforces and nurtures my wants and need for recovery in a place that is difficult to create all those elements. I am thankful and appreciative for what DTP has given me.”
Josh, 33
