Families | Whānau
At Odyssey, we believe strong whānau relationships and community connections are important for everyone’s wellbeing.
We want to see an Aotearoa New Zealand where “people, whānau and communities are connected and supported to live the lives they want; free from drug, alcohol and other addiction challenges.”
We know that people in recovery benefit from reconnecting with their family and friends, and from strengthening connections in their community.
We also know that supporting someone, whose life may be affected by challenges with substance use or other addictive behaviours, can sometimes feel really hard.
We offer several programmes in Auckland and Northland that support whānau and family members develop coping skills, build resilience and improve relationships. We also work across all our services and programmes in a whānau-inclusive way.
Our Services to Support Whānau
Be SMART Support Groups for Friends and Whānau
In Auckland and Whangarei we offer free, weekly support groups for people whose lives are impacted by the addictive behaviours of someone close to them.
A fun and free 4-day programme during the school holidays. It is for children and teens (8 to 17 years old) whose parents or caregivers experience mental health or addiction challenges.
We also support whai ora to reconnect with whānau while staying with us
Whānau are integral to ongoing recovery and we see our role as supporting everyone to move forward positively together.
We welcome and encourage whānau to support you throughout the time you may be accessing Odyssey services, whether in a residential programme, in the community or in another setting.
Whānau may attend multi-family groups, participate in facilitated whānau meetings and family dinners, as well as graduation and other significant events.
We also support you and your whānau during tangi and we provide support when your whānau are unwell. We are here to support strong ties between our whai ora, their whānau, hapu, iwi and marae.
“I’m so glad I didn’t run away in the beginning, I‘m getting to know myself a bit better and my family whānau visit with my kids, we are getting on better and they say they are proud of me for staying. Thank you.”
